Analyzing the Role of E-Books in Vocabulary Development and Language Learning and Students’ Perspectives about it: A Case Study at NUML, Pakistan

Abstract

The study aimed at analyzing the use and the role of e-books in vocabulary building and language learning at undergraduate level, and exploring the undergraduate students’ perspectives about the use and the role of e-books in vocabulary building and language learning. The study used mixed-method approach as it attempted to explore the role of e-books from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. It was a kind of survey study. A total of 45 undergraduate male and female students were selected from the Department of English, National University of Modern Languages, (NUML), Islamabad. Simple random sampling technique was used to select the participants. A self-designed questionnaire, based on five-point Likert scale, ranging from strongly agree to strongly disagree, was used as a tool for the collection of data from the selected participants. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 2020. Frequencies and percentages were calculated for each item in the questionnaire. The study found that undergraduate students use e-books for their academic and language learning purposes. E-books play vital role in their vocabulary building and their English language learning. Moreover, the study surfaced that the undergraduate students have positive attitude towards the use of e-books for vocabulary enhancement and English language learning. The students think of the use of e-books for the mentioned purposes as an effective strategy. Based on the findings, the study concluded that e-books have positive impacts upon the process of vocabulary building and language learning of the students, and that the undergraduate students positively perceive the use of e-books for vocabulary building and English language learning. The study recommended that the future researchers should conduct a large level study at all the major universities of Pakistan, so that the fresh students may be made aware of the effectiveness of e-books for vocabulary building and language learning.
