Abstract

This article aims to trace the theoretical and conceptual history of the sociology of hegemony and identify the epistemological obstacles it has faced, by identifying the conditions under which unequal social relations can be considered the driving force behind this or that form of hegemony.

For this reason, we have chosen to trace the ideas and concepts put forward in this field at three pivotal times in the development of the sociological intellectual project: Etienne de la Boissy's early sociological thought, Max Weber's theoretical and methodological foundation, and finally, Pierre Bourdieu's approach to the sociology of hegemony, the stage of epistemological emergence. This article has enabled us to understand how the topic of unequal social relations has transformed from an object of study to a tool of analysis in the sociological project, as hegemony is no longer part of the explanation but has become the subject of the explanation, and the subject of the empirical study no longer receives the illumination of the concept but becomes the one who reinterprets the concept.
