Abstract

This article investigates the treatment of the Western Sahara conflict by the Spanishnewspaper El Mundo (1991 – 2003), with a specific focus on the role of the UnitedNations and its peace initiatives. Drawing on a quantitative and qualitative analysis ofpress articles, the study explores the newspaper’s treatment of important happeningssuch as the execution of the 1991 Settlement Plan and the initiatives directed by UN Special Emissary James Baker. The results expose variations in media attentiondepending on the evolution of the diplomatic process, underlining both the politicizationof the issue and the stance of El Mundo. The research helps to understand how theSpanish press and the influence of media discourse on public opinion of decolonizationprocesses presented international conflicts.
