Abstract

The establishment of rules and principles of competition law, instead of the old legislation related to prices, indicates that jurisdiction over competition matters has not been left solely to judicial bodies. Instead, there has been a move towards the establishment of a specialised authority to deal with all competition-related issues, the "Competition Council". The Competition Council is an independent administrative authority with legal personality and financial independence.

The Competition Council is charged with combating restrictive and anticompetitive practices, as well as economic consolidations. However, the role of the Competition Council in the banking sector is not clearly defined, as the banking sector is subject to its own specific regulations and strict supervision by specialised bodies.
